Retail foot traffic analytics tells you how many people visit a store, when they come and where they come from. Huq measures this from outside the store, so there is nothing to install and it works for any address, including competitors. Data updates weekly, and more than 1,000 locations are manually validated in each of Huq's 35 markets twice a year. Request a free benchmark of one store against nearby competitors.

Huq platform overview video: a visitor heat map

This short overview walks through the Huq platform. Look for how an area is drawn on the Explore map and how its foot traffic appears by week, month and year. For retail foot traffic analytics, the same steps apply to your stores and to competitors' stores, with heat maps that split visiting from passing traffic.

  • Explore map: draw around any store, yours or a competitor's, to see weekly visits, average daily foot traffic and period-on-period change.
  • Time of day and dwell time: see when visits peak and how long people stay, to check staffing and opening hours.
  • Monthly PDF location reports: share each store's visits against regional and national benchmarks with store and operations teams.

What is retail foot traffic analytics?

Retail foot traffic analytics measures how many people visit a store over time and what those visits look like: peak days and hours, how long people stay, how often they return and where they travel from.

There are two ways to get it. Door counters and sensors count people entering your own stores. They are the right tool for in-store conversion rate, because conversion needs an exact entry count matched to your transactions. But they only see your own doors.

Huq measures visits to any store from the outside, with no counters or cameras. You see totals by week, month and year, average daily foot traffic and visiting versus passing traffic. Track every store the same way, compare them with competitor stores and check a site before you lease it. Counters handle conversion; Huq covers the market around the store.

Frequently asked questions

How do you measure retail foot traffic?

There are two approaches. Door counters, sensors or cameras count people entering your own store, which is what in-store conversion rate needs. External foot traffic data, like Huq's, measures visits to any store from outside, with no hardware. It suits comparing stores, benchmarking competitors and assessing new sites, but it doesn't measure conversion.

Can I see my competitors' foot traffic?

Yes. Huq measures visits to any address, so you can track competitor stores the same way you track your own, or select a competitor brand's locations on the Explore map. Compare weekly visits, peak times, dwell time and where visitors come from, and see your share of visits in a local market.

What is footfall in retail?

Footfall is the British term for foot traffic: the number of people who visit a store, center or street over a period. US retailers usually say foot traffic or store traffic. Retailers track it to spot trends, plan staffing and compare locations. Huq measures it weekly at any US address, including competitors' stores.

How do you get accurate retail foot traffic reports?

Ask any provider how they validate their data, then test it on a store you know. Huq manually validates more than 1,000 locations in each of its 35 markets twice a year. In Huq's own validation study, its visit data tracked Walmart's quarterly US net sales with a 0.85 correlation and 3.8% error. The free analysis lets you check for yourself.

What do I get in the free analysis, and how often is data updated?

The free analysis benchmarks one of your stores against two or three nearby competitors: weekly visits, peak times and where visitors come from. Huq data updates weekly, so once you are set up, each week's figures are added for every store you track.

Which US stores can Huq measure?

Any store address across the US, from mall units to standalone stores and main street shops. There is nothing to install, so you can measure your whole network, competitor stores and potential new sites in the same way. Huq operates in 35 markets and manually validates more than 1,000 locations in each twice a year.
