Huq platform overview video: a visitor heat map

The overview video tours the Huq platform. For your stores, watch how a store and its competitors are picked from brand location layers on the Explore map, how weekly visits and dayparts appear for each, and how a full store list is tracked in Projects. Look for the monthly PDF report too, which compares a store with regional and national benchmarks.

  • Brand locations on the Explore map: find your stores and competitors' stores without typing every address.
  • Behavior measures: dwell time, visit frequency and dayparts show when each store wins or loses shoppers.
  • Projects and PDF reports: monitor every store at once and send monthly reports with year-over-year trends.

What is retail foot traffic?

Retail foot traffic is the number of people who visit a physical store in a given period. Retailers track it alongside sales, conversion rate and basket size to judge store performance, plan staffing and measure the effect of marketing.

There are two ways to measure it. Door counters, Wi-Fi and cameras count people entering your own stores, which is the right tool for conversion rate and staffing. Visit data measures visits from outside, so it works for any store, including competitors' and sites you don't operate yet.

Huq takes the second approach. Its data shows how your stores compare with nearby competitors and brand locations, where shoppers travel from, when they come and which other stores they visit. Teams monitor a whole store list in Projects and share monthly PDF reports. They use it to pick new locations, spot underperforming stores and tell whether a dip is the store or the street.

Frequently asked questions

How do you measure retail foot traffic?

For your own doors, use a people counter or camera at the entrance. Combined with sales, that gives you conversion rate. To measure visits at competitors' stores or sites you don't operate, use visit data from outside the store. Huq measures any store without hardware, and the two methods work well side by side.

Where can I get foot traffic data for competitors' stores?

Counters only work on stores you control. Huq measures visits to any US address from outside, so you can see weekly visits, dwell time and catchment for competitors' stores and benchmark them against your own. Pick competitors from brand location layers on the Explore map, with no access to their sites needed.

How do I get accurate retail foot traffic reports?

Ask the provider how its numbers were validated, then test it on a store where you know the figures. In Huq's own validation study, its visit data tracked Walmart's quarterly US net sales with 0.85 correlation and 3.8% error. Remember that traffic isn't sales: conversion and basket size matter too.

How often is Huq's store visit data updated?

Weekly. Each week's visits are added to the Huq platform, so you can see the effect of a promotion, a competitor opening or a road closure within weeks rather than waiting for a quarterly report. Data feeds arrive as CSV or Parquet files in Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage.

Which stores does Huq cover in the US?

Any store address across the US, including competitors' stores, shopping centers and main streets. No counters, sensors or cameras are needed. Huq covers 35 markets in total, so retailers with stores abroad can compare them on the same basis. More than 1,000 locations are manually validated in each market twice a year.

How do I get a free retail foot traffic analysis?

Enter the address of one of your US stores in the form. We'll send an analysis showing weekly visits, catchment, dwell time and how the store compares with nearby competitors. Choose a store where you know the numbers so you can check ours.
