Retail location analytics shows how each of your stores performs from the outside: how many people visit, where they come from, how long they stay and how that compares with nearby competitor brands. Huq measures any US address with no hardware and updates weekly. More than 1,000 locations are manually validated in each of its 35 markets twice a year. Huq platform overview video: a visitor heat map

The video is a short overview of the Huq platform. Watch how an area is drawn on the Explore map, how foot traffic, catchment and behavior appear for it, and how sites are grouped into Projects. For retail location analytics, picture the same steps run on your own stores, nearby competitors and the brands you track.

  • Explore map: select a store or a brand's locations to see weekly foot traffic and visiting versus passing traffic.
  • Catchment and drive time: see where each store's visitors live and how far they travel, to test a trade area against reality.
  • Projects and exports: monitor every store in one folder and share CSV, Excel or monthly PDF location reports.

What is retail location analytics?

Retail location analytics is the use of location data to judge how store sites perform and where a retailer should trade next. It covers foot traffic, trade areas, competitor activity and overlap between your own stores, measured for the place rather than the till.

Most retailers already know their sales by store. What sales data cannot tell you is why. A store can be underperforming because the street is quiet, because a competitor opened nearby, or because of something inside the store. Location data separates those causes, so you can tell whether it's the store or the street.

Huq covers a whole portfolio in one platform. Pick your stores on the Explore map and see weekly visits, residents versus visitors, catchment and drive time, dwell time and visit frequency. Benchmark each site against competitor brands and its industry, and monitor the network in Projects. Competitor and candidate sites are measured the same way as your own.

What's in your retail location analytics report

01

Weekly foot traffic trends

Visits to your store and nearby competitors, week by week, so you can spot growth or decline early.

02

Catchment and drive time

Where each store's visitors come from and how far they travel, showing the true trade area rather than a radius.

03

Dwell time and visit frequency

How long people stay and how often they come back, a sign of how loyal each location's visitors are.

04

Brand and industry benchmarking

Rank every store against your network, competitor brands and industry performance on the same measures.

What a retail location analytics report shows

Here is a sample analysis for one store and a nearby competitor, the same format you get in your free analysis. In the platform, every view exports to CSV or Excel.

Weekly visits: your store vs a nearby competitor

01

Weekly visits: your store vs a nearby competitor

Two lines, one per site. When your store dips and the competitor doesn't, the cause is likely the store, not the street.

Catchment map: where each store's visitors come from

02

Catchment map: where each store's visitors come from

Shaded areas show where visitors come from. Overlap with the competitor's catchment shows where you are competing for the same shoppers.

Portfolio league table: every store on one view

03

Portfolio league table: every store on one view

Stores ranked on visits, dwell time and frequency in one Project, so you can see which locations lead, which lag and where to look first.

Frequently asked questions

What is location analytics?

Location analytics is the analysis of data tied to places: where people go, when, for how long and where they travel from. In retail it's used to judge existing stores, choose new ones and benchmark against competitors. Huq provides weekly foot traffic, catchment and drive time, residents versus visitors, dwell time, visit frequency and brand benchmarking for any US address.

What retail location data does Huq provide?

Huq provides weekly foot traffic, visiting versus passing traffic, residents versus visitors, catchment and drive time, dwell time, visit frequency, time of day and cross-visitation, plus brand locations, industry performance and shopping center types. Demographics and spend are available in selected markets. Use it in the Explore map and Projects, export CSV, Excel or PDF reports, or receive Parquet or CSV data feeds.

How is GIS used in the retail industry?

Retailers use GIS to map stores, competitors, trade areas and drive times, and to screen candidate sites. A map shows what's where, not how busy it is. Huq adds observed behavior: weekly visits, where visitors come from and how long they stay. Its data feeds, Parquet or CSV files delivered into Amazon S3 or Google Cloud Storage, load next to your other location data.

What do I get in the free analysis?

Tell us one of your store addresses and a nearby competitor. We send back a short analysis showing weekly foot traffic for both, where visitors come from, and dwell time and visit frequency. It's a practical way to check the data against a store you already know well.

How often is the data updated?

Huq data updates weekly. That is frequent enough to see trends form after a remodel, a competitor opening or a change in opening hours, without waiting for a quarterly report. Each week's figures add to the trend for every site you track.

Which US locations can Huq analyze?

Huq measures visits to any address across the US, including stores, shopping centers and main streets. No hardware or access is needed, so you can analyze competitor stores and sites you are considering as easily as your own. Huq operates in 35 markets and manually validates more than 1,000 locations in each twice a year.
