Retail competitor analysis usually stops at prices, ranges and marketing. Huq adds the physical layer: how many people visit a competitor's stores, where they come from, how long they stay and how your brand performs against theirs. It needs no sensors or cameras, so it works on any US address, including rivals' sites. Huq manually validates more than 1,000 locations in each of its 35 markets twice a year. Start with a free analysis of one store.

Huq platform overview video: a visitor heat map

The overview shows the Huq platform from first search to export. For retail competitor analysis, look for the brand locations layer on the Explore map, which puts rival stores next to yours, and the foot traffic, dwell and frequency metrics each area returns. It also covers Projects, where you can monitor a whole competitor set, and the exports and monthly PDF reports teams take into planning meetings.

  • Brand locations layer: find rival stores near yours on the Explore map and add them as areas to compare.
  • Brand analysis and industry performance: see whether a competitor is gaining on you or the whole category is moving.
  • Cross-visitation: measure how many of your visitors also visit a rival, for up to 10 location pairs at once.

What is retail competitor analysis?

Retail competitor analysis is the process of identifying the businesses you compete with and studying how they perform. Most guides cover prices, product ranges, marketing and reviews. For a multi-store retailer, the harder question is physical: are rival stores drawing more visitors than yours, and from where?

That is where location data comes in. Retail competitive intelligence built on foot traffic shows visit trends at competitor stores, your share of visits in a market, how much your trade areas overlap and which other stores your visitors go to.

Huq covers this physical side. It does not track competitor pricing, assortment or online sales. It measures visits to any address and adds brand analysis, industry performance and cross-visitation, so you can benchmark your stores against rivals on the same basis and decide where to defend, invest or open next.

Frequently asked questions

What is competitive intelligence?

Competitive intelligence is gathering and analyzing information about competitors so you can make better decisions. In retail it covers pricing, ranges, marketing and store performance. Huq covers the store side: weekly visits, brand analysis, industry performance, dwell time, visit frequency and catchment at competitors' stores, measured the same way as your own. It does not track pricing, assortment or online sales.

How do you gather competitive intelligence?

Combine public sources, such as competitor websites, annual reports, pricing checks and store visits, with data you can measure consistently. For physical stores, foot traffic data is the hard part to get. Huq's brand locations layer puts rival stores on the map, and it measures visits at any address without sensors or site access, so you can follow a competitor's stores week by week.

How do you conduct a retail competitor analysis?

Name the competitors that matter for each store, then compare weekly visits, share of visits, dwell time, visit frequency and catchment overlap side by side. Share of visits is each store's visits divided by the area total. It is a traffic measure, not a sales measure, so pair it with your own sales data before deciding where to defend, invest or open.

What's in the free retail competitor analysis?

We take one of your stores and the competitor locations you choose and compare weekly visits, visit share, dwell time, visit frequency and catchment overlap. We walk you through the results. There's no cost and no commitment.

How often is competitor foot traffic data updated?

Huq data updates weekly, so you can follow how a competitor's opening, closure or promotion changes visits at their stores and yours week by week, instead of waiting for their quarterly results.

Which competitor locations can Huq measure?

Any address across the US: stores, shopping centers, strip malls and main streets. No hardware or site access is needed, so you can measure competitors' sites the same way as your own. Huq works in 35 markets and manually validates more than 1,000 locations in each market twice a year.
